In California, public assistance benefits are placed onto an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card. That means, if you receive CalFresh benefits, San Diego County loads them onto an EBT card each month. For those new to CalFresh, this post covers the basics of using your EBT card in San Diego. There are many names and acronyms associated with food benefits. Here are a few that will make it easier to navigate the system:

  • SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the nationwide food assistance program formerly known as food stamps.
  • CalFresh is the name of SNAP in California.
  • EBT stands for electronic benefits transfer. EBT is sometimes used to describe CalFresh benefits, but typically refers to the EBT card itself.

What Is an EBT Card?

An EBT card looks like and can be used like a debit card. Every month, the government adds your CalFresh benefits directly to the card. You can then use it as payment at SNAP-authorized stores until you spend your monthly benefits.

How Do I Get an EBT Card in San Diego?

EBT cards are automatically issued when you are approved for CalFresh. Your EBT card will be mailed to the address you provided and should arrive within 7 to 10 days. It will be sent separately from the approval letter and information packet. If you need your card urgently, you can visit your local Family Resource Center and request a same-day printed EBT card.

If your card is ever lost, damaged, or stolen, you should call customer service right away at (877) 328-9677. They will disable your card and walk you through the steps of receiving a new one.

Checking Your EBT Balance

There are several ways to check the balance on your EBT card. You can:

  • Call the EBT Customer Service Helpline at (877) 328-9677.
  • Use the BenefitsCal website.
  • Check the bottom of the receipt on your most recent purchase using your card.

Your benefits should load onto your card on the same day each month.

Where Can I Use My EBT Card in San Diego?

You can use your EBT card at a range of locations, including:

  • Grocery stores
  • Farmers markets
  • Some online retailers, such as Amazon and Walmart

You cannot use your EBT card to buy:

  • Alcohol

  • Hot foods
  • Nonfood items such as pet foods, cleaning supplies, or hygiene items
