School Pantry

Providing Food to Families in a Convenient Location

Nearly 50 percent of K-12 students in San Diego County rely on free or reduced-price meals. As such, school pantries offer a much-needed support system for low-income families. Held in partnership with about 40 schools throughout San Diego County, Feeding San Diego’s School Pantry Program makes it easy for families to receive food.

Typically held twice a month and run by school staff or parents, school pantries use spaces on campus, such as auditoriums or parking lots, to distribute nutritious, healthy food. Parents and members of the community can pick up produce and pantry staples.

Feeding San Diego school pantry partner, Hamilton Elementary School, distributes free food on March 16, 2022.Jessica, City Heights “My other daughter graduated from here, so I’ve known about it for a long time. I was helping, too. I was a volunteer. It’s good for parents who don’t have any money to buy food for their kids. It’s important. I have two kids. We get fruit, rice, spaghetti, twice a month. I come when I can make it. Sometimes my neighbor comes and I come with her and she gives me a ride. The box is heavy, and I don’t have a car. The food helps a lot. Thank you so much for helping parents. Sometimes, it’s hard. Sometimes they don’t have any money to put food on the table.”

It helps us get some of the nutrients and the food my daughter and my family need. It helps sustain us. The fact is that gas has gone up almost $2 a gallon. It helps financially and makes sure that we eat well-balanced. Thank you, and I appreciate what you guys have donated for other people. It really does help people a lot when it comes to budgeting and getting well-balanced nutrition, so we appreciate that.
