FEEDING SAN DIEGO RECOGNIZED BY UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION OF SAN DIEGO AS ‘REAL LIFE HEROES’
Hunger relief organization acknowledged for its local humanitarian work on World Humanitarian Day
SAN DIEGO (August 19, 2020) — Today, Feeding San Diego is recognized as part of World Humanitarian Day by the United Nations Association of San Diego (UNA San Diego). The San Diego Chapter has partnered with the UNHCR, The UN Refugee Agency, to create a short video acknowledging individuals for their humanitarian work. This year’s commemoration is themed “Every Action Counts” and features local essential workers from Feeding San Diego’s distribution sites that UNA San Diego considers #reallifeheroes and #essentialhumanitarians. You can watch the video here.
“We thank Feeding San Diego for all it does to ‘leave no one behind’ under the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals mandate,” said Bettina Hausmann, President & Chair, Board of Directors, United Nations Association of San Diego. “Moreover, we commend Feeding San Diego on their dedication to eradicating hunger especially through its food rescue program.”
Annually on August 19, the U.N. recognizes World Humanitarian Day. This year, in light of the ongoing COVID19 pandemic, humanitarian work takes on new meaning in the form of essential workers who have kept communities afloat during the pandemic and risk their health on the front lines every day.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by the United Nations Association of San Diego on this important day,” said Gavon Morris, Chief Development & Marketing Officer of Feeding San Diego. “We are proud of our work and are even more committed to ending hunger in the face of this challenging public health crisis.”
From March 14 to July 31, Feeding San Diego provided more than 12.8 million meals to the community, an increase of 43% compared to the same period the year prior. The downturn caused by the pandemic has exasperated the hunger crisis in San Diego, requiring Feeding San Diego to step in to provide emergency services to assist those affected.
