This past summer, thanks to Hunger Free Summer grant generously donated by ConAgra, Feeding San Diego was able to launch its Regional School Break program. This program seeks to assist families with children during school breaks when they no longer have access to free or reduced-price school meals.

Feeding San Diego has consistently seen the need increase when children are out of school and no longer have access to school meals. With the added burden of providing more meals, families feel a strain on their food budgets and are forced to make difficult decisions between paying for groceries and other expenses. The Regional School Break program helps mitigate the need for those decisions by providing 22 pounds of food per household at distributions in the North, South, East and Central regions of the county. The program will provide food during the summer months and two key school break times in December and April.

In December, Regional School Break distributions were held at Castle Park Elementary in South County, Porter Elementary in Central San Diego, Chase Elementary in East County and Orange Glen High School in North County where at least 580 households received over 22,000 pounds of food.  The distributions were well-attended by families and brought the communities together as local volunteers came out to help and schools opened their doors to make the distributions a success.
