Hunger Action Day 2016

On May 25, more than 40 representatives from Feeding San Diego, including staff, clients, volunteers and partners, traveled on a bus to Sacramento to participate in Hunger Action Day.

Organized by The California Hunger Action Coalition (CHAC), Hunger Action Day takes place each May, bringing together hundreds of advocates from across the state to lend their voice to the efforts of hunger-relief organizations that sponsor and support meaningful policy proposals in the state legislature. This is the fifth year FSD has participated, providing San Diegans with the opportunity to meet elected officials and advocate for legislation affecting hunger in our communities.

This year, our group was able to meet with Assemblymember Shirley Weber, Senator Ben Hueso and Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez and many others. San Diego was well represented with participants from all over San Diego County including Encanto, Spring Valley and Alpine. They spoke on issues including tax credits for produce donations to food banks, summer meal programs for children and hunger on college campuses. These meetings gave individuals the platform to share their stories and struggles, along with the impact specific legislation would have on their lives.

Hunger Action Day fell on the middle of an important week in the Capitol, and the stories and experience shared will have a lasting effect on the votes placed by our representatives in coming weeks.

Participants were also able to honor a local legislator who has been an advocate for those struggling with hunger. During the lunch rally at Hunger Action Day, FASD was presented Assemblymember Weber with a “Hunger Fighter Award” as she spoke at the rally.

Thank you to all the participants and staff for lending your voices to build a hunger-free and healthy San Diego! And if you’d like to stay up to date on our advocacy efforts, please sign up for our Advocacy Alerts here.
