Homeless Gain Access to Meals Through Feeding San Diego

Today, Feeding San Diego will start providing ready-to-eat meals at the temporary homeless Safe Camp at City Operations Yard run by Alpha Project. A lack of meal service at lunch time has been a challenge, causing many residents to search for food. By offering complete, nutritious lunches directly to the Safe Camp, Feeding San Diego is solving a problem for many of the homeless residents, many of whom are women and children.

“We are living up to our name,” said Vince Hall, CEO of Feeding San Diego. “The humanitarian crisis on our streets must end and every person deserves our compassion. San Diego is indebted to Bob McElroy and the Alpha Project for their leadership on this critical issue. By providing lunches to the Safe Camp we are ensuring that all homeless residents, including women, children and families, have access to a healthy, nutritious lunch.”

Each lunch is a complete meal with entrée, fresh fruit, vegetable and milk or water. Meal examples include spaghetti and meatballs, chicken teriyaki and rice, turkey taco bowls and healthy side salads. Currently, 200 meals are being provided daily, with 35 meals specifically for children.

“We are extremely grateful to Feeding San Diego for providing lunch to our men, women and children residing at the Campground,” said Bob McElroy, President & CEO of Alpha Project. “Delivering 200 meals each day so our residents do not have to leave for lunch is a huge blessing. Thank you for your generosity and support.”

Feeding San Diego will provide meals for the next few weeks until the more permanent Sprung fabric structures are constructed and the residents can be safely moved to their new locations.

To contribute, San Diegans can help Feeding San Diego fund these meals by making a donation at give.feedingsandiego.org/safecamp.
