During the 2015 holiday season, more than 100 organizations generously hosted food drives benefiting Feeding San Diego. In total, these incredible community partners donated 26,000 pounds of food, the equivalent of more than 21,000 meals.
Mt. Helix Academy, a private school located in La Mesa, was a key partner. In their third year of partnering with Feeding San Diego for the holidays, they donated 1,500 pounds.
Tracey Singer, Marketing Coordinator for the school, said that the drive was hosted for three and a half weeks and was a huge success involving the students, teachers and staff. One of the students’ mother, who is a college professor, offered extra credit to her students and donated 1,000 cans.
Many companies used their food drives to spark friendly competition among their staff. As part of its
community volunteerism program, teams at Underground Elephant, a digital software company, competed to see who could raise the largest amount. In just two months, they donated 2,131 pounds. Underground Elephant volunteers also packed 560 BackPack bags and sorted more than 5,000 pounds of reclamation food at the distribution center. On average, each employee donated more than 22 pounds of food.
Collecting and donating food is just one way our community fights hunger. Wateridge Insurance Services did things a little differently by hosting a food and fund drive which brought in more than $800 from their employees. The money raised will provide 3,200 hundred meals for people in need.We are so grateful for all of the organizations who gave this holiday season. We couldn’t fight hunger without the generosity of San Diegans.
