As Hunger in San Diego County Hits Record Levels, Local Company Pacific Building Group Tees Up its Biggest Charity Golf Tournament Yet for Feeding San Diego
The third annual tournament at the Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe on Aug. 24 aims to surpass the $115,000 raised last year for the region’s only Feeding America partner food bank
Feeding San Diego is honored to have been chosen by San Diego-based construction services company Pacific Building Group as the beneficiary of the company’s annual Charity Golf Tournament for the third year in a row. The tournament will take place on Monday, August 24 at The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe. With food insecurity in San Diego now surpassing peak pandemic levels, affecting nearly 430,000 San Diegans, it’s critical for nonprofits to have the support of local companies.
The day will include exclusive golf, delicious food and drinks, and a raffle and auction. All net proceeds will benefit Feeding San Diego, the leading hunger relief and food rescue organization that provides more than 36.2 million meals annually to children, families, seniors, college students, military families, and veterans in partnership with a network of more than 400 local charities, schools, colleges, faith communities, healthcare providers, and meal sites.
“As a locally owned and operated company, we believe it is our responsibility to give back to the community we help build,” said Andre Childers, president of Pacific Building Group. “Right now, nearly 430,000 of our neighbors—including thousands of children—are facing food insecurity at record levels, and we want to do our part. Three years in, this tournament has become something our team looks forward to every year. In addition to this being a fun event, we also understand what it means for the families we’re helping feed right here in San Diego”
The tournament comes at a time when food banks across the country are reeling from continued inflation, federal budget cuts, and high demand for hunger-relief services. Since last summer, Feeding San Diego has seen an increase of about 30,000 additional households attending its food distributions every month, up to over 220,000 households from around 190,000. The non-profit operates a multitude of hunger-relief and food programs countywide that support people facing hunger with food assistance or resources, utilizing a decentralized food rescue model to source food and redirect edible surplus food that might otherwise go to waste. Last fiscal year, the non-profit rescued more than 40 million pounds of food, the most in its nearly 20-year history.
The organization is also unique in that it relies primarily on funding from individuals, corporations, and foundations to operate its programs, with only about two percent coming from government sources. With continued economic strain, it’s imperative that the community continue to rally behind Feeding San Diego’s mission.
