Rising Prices of the Holiday Season
When you envision a holiday dinner, what do you see? A table filled with turkey, ham, stuffing, roasted vegetables, and potatoes. You can smell the sweet scent of apple pie, cranberry sauce, and fresh baked cookies. Unfortunately, many of these foods are hard for organizations like Feeding San Diego to come by during the holiday season.
During the holiday season, many of these foods and food in general become more expensive due to the high demand. This demand and price makes it harder for hunger-relief organizations to provide these types of food to the community.
Along with high demand, shipping costs also increase during the holiday season. Many freights are being used to ship Christmas trees which decreases the amount of freights available, hence rising prices.
There are other factors that go into the increased cost of holiday foods, especially this year. With the natural disasters that recently occurred in Florida, Puerto Rico, northern California, and Texas; the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has purchased much of the shipping power that is needed to help rebuild the affected communities. The limited shipping space that was already expensive is now driving costs up even more.
What Can I Do to Help?
Donate. Donating is the best way to help food insecure families in the San Diego community. For every dollar donated to Feeding San Diego, we can provide four meals to families facing hunger.
At the beginning of autumn, the amount of food drives starts to increase. While the idea of food drives comes from the right place; economically speaking, there are better ways to help. The can of food that was purchased for $1, could instead be donated and provide four meals for someone in need. Donations go much further when used by Feeding San Diego because we can buy food in bulk.
This holiday season, suggest a fund instead of a food drive to your company, family, or friends. 1 in 8 people in San Diego face hunger and we need your help to close the meal gap this holiday season. Let’s all work together to give families the warm feeling you get as you sit around the table with the ones you love, enjoying a delicious holiday meal.
