Food as Medicine: Prioritizing Nutrition for Well-Being

At Feeding San Diego, we believe in the power of food to heal and sustain. Our Feeding Wellness program is at the forefront of the “food as medicine” movement, recognizing the crucial link between nutrition and overall health.

The Impact of Healthy Eating

In a world facing a global epidemic of diet-related chronic diseases, we’re taking action. By prioritizing fresh, nutritious meals, we’re not just feeding San Diego—we’re nurturing its health.

  • 89% of our distributed foods are classified as “Choose Often” under the Healthy Eating Research (HER) guidelines
  • 98% fall under the combined “Choose Often” and “Choose Sometimes” categories

These impressive figures for FY24 showcase our commitment to providing not just food, but the right kind of nourishment.

Agency Partners

Feeding San Diego works with nearly 370 community partners to distribute healthy food throughout San Diego County. Our agency partners include a range of nonprofits and organizations, including local charities, schools, faith communities, meal sites, and food pantries.

We work with agencies in various ways. For some, we provide food directly, while others benefit from direct partnerships with food donors like grocery stores.

Your support makes this work possible.

Donations stay 100% local and have an immediate impact on San Diegans in need.

Because we rescue food and partner with food distributors, our distribution model stretches your dollar further. Every dollar you donate helps provide 2 meals to the community.

Stories from Our Feeding Wellness Healthcare Partners

Dr. Afflalo, A Healthier Me

A team of nurses at the Dr. Afflalo's health fair

“I’m the director of the health ministry at City of Hope church. They used to get food delivered from a different partner, but that fell apart. When I took over, I signed up to be a partner with Feeding San Diego. I started doing health screenings, but I also picked back up with the food delivery process. We’re in a food desert down there in Southeast San Diego. There’s one Food 4 Less in about a 5 to 7 mile radius. Everything is picked over, I wouldn’t shop there, but they don’t have a choice. Having Feeding San Diego fills that gap.”

Jovita, Poder Popular, Vista Community Clinic

“I have been with Poder Popular for five years, and I also work with Feeding San Diego. It has been lovely to help Feeding San Diego distribute food to our community these past five years. It’s beautiful because it’s like while we’re helping Feeding San Diego, we are also helping ourselves with our time donated to them. It’s a wonderful thing because Feeding San Diego helps our community and our families a lot.

The supermarkets are going to throw this food in the trash. For us, the people who need the food, it’s helpful because it’s not trash yet. It’s food that you can use for something. I know that sometimes they’re going to throw the vegetables in the trash or use them as a fertilizer for the other plants. But for us, it’s life, because we have to feed ourselves with those vegetables and fruits. I am grateful to Feeding San Diego for allowing us to have this pantry for ourselves and the community.”
