Feeding Families

Healthy Food for Families

Feeding America estimates that more than 350,000 people in San Diego County are food insecure, including over 100,000 children. With San Diego rated as one of the country’s most expensive places to live by the U.S. News and World Report, many families are finding that their incomes no longer stretch as far as they used to. Despite having one or more working adults in their households, these families face the difficult choice between food and other basic needs.

Our Feeding Families programs aim to ensure that every family has access to the nutritious food they need.

Programs That Support Feeding Families

School Pantry

Feeding San Diego’s School Pantry program bridges the financial gap for families, ensuring children and parents have access to nutritious food. By offering free, fresh produce and pantry staples at local schools, we bring healthy options directly to where families already gather. Held twice monthly and run by school staff or parent volunteers, these pantries transform school spaces into food distribution hubs. Families can easily pick up nutritious ingredients to create wholesome meals at home, supporting both student success and family well-being.

Mobile Pantry

Our Mobile Pantry Program brings a traveling food source directly to families in northern and eastern San Diego County. This unique approach overcomes barriers like transportation and paperwork, making it easier for rural families to access healthy food. At 25 consistent locations, families can receive 20-25 pounds of nutritious food, either monthly or twice monthly. By simplifying the process, we reach families facing hunger who might otherwise struggle to access traditional food assistance programs.

Produce Pantry

Feeding San Diego’s Produce Pantry Program ensures families have access to fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables, which are often more expensive and harder to find than processed foods. We target communities where families face barriers to fresh food access, such as limited budgets, lack of nearby grocery stores, or health challenges. Each household receives 20-30 pounds of seasonal produce, helping families incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their meals and promoting healthier eating habits for all family members.

College Pantry

Our College Pantry Program supports not just students, but entire families pursuing higher education. With over 20% of college students being parents, these pantries are crucial for family success. By providing free, healthy food options on campuses across San Diego County, we help student-parents and their families focus on education rather than food insecurity. Regular distribution schedules and pantry hours make it convenient for busy families to access nutritious food, supporting both academic achievement and family well-being.

Feeding San Diego Marketplace

Located at our Sorrento Valley headquarters, the Feeding San Diego Marketplace offers a dignified shopping experience for families in need. This welcoming space allows community members to shop once a month for no-cost groceries, including dry goods, frozen protein, and fresh produce. Designed with families in mind, the Marketplace helps parents and caregivers select foods that meet their household’s preferences and nutritional needs, ensuring that every family member has access to healthy, satisfying meals.

Stories from Our Feeding Families Sites

Daina

“Right now, everything is really expensive, as we all know. Being the city that’s the most expensive, I want to say in all of the United States, as a single parent, it’s difficult. With the holidays, this is the very first year where it’s been difficult to make ends meet. We recently moved and are paying more rent and all of that. Thank you for everything. The help, the food, the generosity, the kindness. Being here, in general, I’m sure that more than just our little family appreciates you guys.”

“Both my husband and I work at the same time so it would be impossible for us to maintain our jobs without PrimeTime. We wouldn’t be able to work, make money. It’s a relief knowing that there is food available. Things are very expensive right now, so what they offer us is very helpful. You can pick and choose vegetables, and everything is good quality.”
