Backpack Program

Keeping Kids Fed over the Weekend

The Backpack Program provides local students with an easy-to-carry bag filled with healthy staple items and fresh produce. This weekly program helps bridge the gap between weekday school meals, ensuring children are well-nourished and ready to learn on Monday.

When teachers identify students they believe need support, they can set up a system so students can pick up their items discreetly when leaving school on Thursday or Friday afternoon. With over 240,000 students relying on free or reduced-price meals, the Backpack Program offers much-needed support for families with limited resources. Feeding San Diego partners with school that have at least 50% participation in free and reduced priced meals to provide Backpack Programs.

A Story from Our Backpack Program

Young girl receives box of free pantry staples at a Feeding San Diego school pantry

I’m a single Dad, and my food bill has gone up times three, so this [distribution] has been invaluable. I can’t afford the increase in expenses. It’s fed us. That’s not an understatement. There’re fruits, vegetables, potatoes, eggs, bread, canned goods, milk, cereal, everything, and there’s always something different. We’ve actually survived off this food. Tell your people – it’s making a difference.
