Donor Advised Funds (DAF)

Donor advised funds (DAF) are a great way to support causes you care about, like Feeding San Diego. With a DAF, you have the flexibility to recommend how much and how often to grant money to Feeding San Diego and other qualified charities.

You can make an immediate impact by recommending a grant or recurring grants now. Or create a lasting legacy by naming Feeding San Diego the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the fund.

Frequently Asked Questions about Donor Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is an investment account for charitable giving. Donors make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then distribute funds over time to qualified charities. A DAF is composed of donations and administered by a third party, known as a sponsoring organization.

First, a donor makes an irrevocable contribution to the DAF. After doing so, they can take an immediate tax deduction. Once in the fund, assets can be invested. Any investment growth is tax-free for the donor. As soon as the fund is established, the donor can recommend grants to the charitable organizations of their choice. These grants can be one-time contributions or recurring, either with recognition or anonymously.

For direct donations, the donor receives tax documentation from the charity. With a DAF, the donor receives tax documentation from the sponsoring organization of the DAF instead.

Some benefits of a donor advised fund include:

  • Maximize tax benefits
  • Contribute immediately and donate when you’re ready, giving you time to develop a philanthropic strategy
  • Grow your contributions over time through investments, creating more charitable funds to share
