In its continued effort to provide solutions to those in San Diego experiencing food insecurity, Feeding San Diego has partnered with North County non-profit Healthy Day Partners. Those who visit the Produce Pantry and the Feeding San Diego Marketplace at Feeding San Diego’s Sorrento Valley headquarters can now pick up Healthy Day Partners’ signature Grab & Grow Gardens® kit, which includes healthy, mature, seasonal seedlings that are ready for growing in a container or the ground. The kits also include growing instructions in multiple languages, making it easy for anyone to successfully grow healthy food at home. By joining forces with Healthy Day Partners, Feeding San Diego can educate those seeking food assistance about growing food at home, and Healthy Day Partners can have direct access to community members who can benefit from this resource.

“Collaboration and innovation are essential components to solving complex issues like local hunger and social inequities,” said Mim Michelove, CEO and president of Healthy Day Partners. “It truly is an honor and a privilege to partner with Feeding San Diego. Distributing these kits is a natural extension to their food rescue and distribution model. By working together, we can provide fresh, colorful, healthy food alongside the life-long skill and joy of growing your own food at home – even if it’s in a bucket!”

Feeding San Diego’s distribution model relies on partnerships with other non-profits, faith-based organizations, after-school programs, and meal programs to get nutritious meals out to the community. While the organization’s mission is solely devoted to providing ready-to-eat food, partnerships like this allow it to offer additional wraparound services to the people it serves.

“We believe food is a basic human right, and Healthy Day Partners’ mission aligns with ours in that it’s a simple way to ensure access to nutritious food,” said Erica Moe, direct service distribution manager at Feeding San Diego. “It’s highly beneficial to be able to provide these kits to people who visit our location weekly or monthly to access food and empower them to try their hand at growing their own food for the future.”

Healthy Day Partners will be at the Feeding San Diego Marketplace, a client-choice market that provides no-cost groceries, on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month and at the Produce Pantry, which distributes fresh produce, on the first and third Saturdays of every month. This spring, seedling selections include Provider bush beans, Pomegranate Crunch lettuce, Little Napoli tomatoes, and Early Jalapeno peppers.
