Mobile Marketplace Brings Fresh Produce to Partners Across the County

Not only do one in eight San Diegans face hunger, but they also lack access to nutritious food, especially fresh produce. When purchasing food on a limited budget, many people make difficult choices, choosing foods that temporarily meet their needs but lack nutritional value, like fast food or prepackaged meals. Produce can also be hard to access for many communities that do not have a local grocery store, as smaller corner stores carry very little fresh produce, if any. Feeding San Diego’s Mobile Marketplace is one of our many efforts to provide access to nutritious food to everyone across San Diego County.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the Mobile Marketplace visits different areas of the county to deliver fresh fruits and vegetables to Feeding San Diego’s network of distribution partners. On Monday, you may find the Mobile Marketplace on its way out to North County, on Tuesday in East County and Wednesday in central San Diego.

More than 30 distribution partners participate in these deliveries each week, as it enables multiple partners to visit a single site close to their facility and not have to drive more miles to Feeding San Diego’s distribution center. The Mobile Marketplace saves time and resources for our distribution partners, enabling us to better San Diegans in need together.

Fua, who represents Trinity Lutheran Church, shared, “The Mobile Marketplace helps out a lot. We give a bag of produce to all of our participants along with another bag of staple items. We value nutritious food and the Mobile Marketplace helps us to meet the needs of our community members who visit our pantry.”

Aurelio from Agape Christian Center also shared, “The Mobile Marketplace is so helpful. Everything we got today was gone by the evening. This food gets out to the community as fast as possible.”

It’s through strong partnerships like these that allow us to feed – and nourish – San Diego.
