“I’m currently serving in the Marine Corps. We’ve got one on the way so stuff like this is really amazing. Coming here from Japan, where we were stationed before, settling in, the prices here, all the little things: the crib, the car seat, we don’t have any furniture. With food, I’m trying to find the cheapest where to shop. It’s a mix of the commissary and maybe somewhere off-base. But we’re trying to find the balance between healthy and cheap. Being able to have this and offset a lot of the costs is really life-changing. These marines, sailors, foremen, everyone, living in San Diego, their paycheck is significantly less. With the family, trying to survive, trying to eat, trying to go out every once in awhile and just live a normal life, stuff like this makes a huge difference.”

“There are seven people in my household: two adults and five kids. Three of the kids go here. The truth is that in the last few months here, the price of things has gone up a lot. And thank God there is this help because we save on several things, such as vegetables, and it’s good for us because we save some dollars. The food is very healthy, very wholesome. Truthfully, like I said, this helps us a lot because when the kids want something, someone can go make them something from what we get here, which is not nothing. I would like to say thank you for the great help you give us and that more people could join to do the same to donate, because there are many who need it. That is the truth. “This food distribution helps me out a lot right now because I’m on workman’s comp. I injured my shoulder at work. Financially, what workman’s comp is giving me, I can hardly pay my bills. They’re telling me I’m going to have to have surgery. At least I know I have food to eat. Every year, rent goes up. I live by myself. I have kids, but they all growing; they got their own families. As a foreigner, too, I try to be independent on my own instead of going to them [her kids] for help, you know. So this is very helpful. I’m used to it because I’m from a third-world country. You have to fend for yourself, be independent, make ends meet. It doesn’t bother me. I’m strong.”
