This summer, legal professionals can support critical hunger-relief programs by being a part of Food from the Bar. This friendly fundraising competition for legal professionals is now in its 12th year and provides an opportunity for the local legal community to give back. During the month-long campaign, legal teams compete to raise funds, volunteer, and host food drives for Feeding San Diego’s programs that support children facing hunger. The campaign kicks off on June 1 and Feeding San Diego is looking for additional participants to join and help meet the fundraising goal of $100,000. A team can be a law firm, insurance company, legal staffing agency, legal association, or even an individual legal professional.

“Every summer, I dedicate my time to support Feeding San Diego’s Food from the Bar event. Having been involved for years, I understand the crucial need, especially during summer, when many children in San Diego face hunger without school meals. When I was a child, summer meant adventure, but for some in our community, it brings worry about where their next meal will come from. It’s a cause close to my heart,” shares Frank J. Johnson, co-founder and managing partner of Johnson Fistel and a member of the Food from the Bar steering committee.

During the summer months, nearly half of San Diego County students will lose access to nutritious meals that they rely on while in school. When school lets out for summer, families who rely on free and reduced-price meals can’t access them and parents must suddenly provide three meals a day. Inflation continues to negatively impact household budgets, and food budgets simply don’t stretch as far or buy as much as last year. According to Feeding America, there are nearly 80,000 children in San Diego County who experience food insecurity. Many families rely on Feeding San Diego’s programs that provide meals for children during the summer months.

“By signing on to be a part of this annual campaign, local legal professionals show their commitment to making a positive impact in their community. Every year, we are so honored to be a chosen non-profit of legal professionals looking to support families in bringing nutritious meals home,” said Ali Colbran, senior director of development at Feeding San Diego. “Childhood hunger has complex ramifications that can impact a child well into adulthood. Hunger relief programs like our School Pantry Program and Backpack Program alleviate hunger in our communities. They would also not be possible without fundraising efforts like Food from the Bar.”

Participating law firms this year that have signed on so far include Johnson Fistel, Cooley, Pillsbury, and Fair Cadora, APC. San Diego Public Defenders have also joined.
