Fill bags with staple items on Saturdays, produce on Wednesday evenings. Under-served children receive these bags for nourishment over the weekend.
Sort food that has been pulled from grocery store shelves to prevent it from reaching the landfill (approximately 60% is still edible and nutritious). Volunteers check expiration dates against their extended best by date and then sort and box each food by type.
FSD procures bulk product in 50-pound bags to minimize costs and then repacks the items into smaller, family friendly bags. Beans, rice, cereals, and other items are sealed, labeled, and boxed by volunteers.
Donated by manufacturers and retailers, volunteers label blank cans called “brites” with nutrition information.
Volunteers sort produce from the California Association of Food Banks and other local donors. Varying differences in size, shape, and color are not preferred for sale in local grocery stores.
Volunteers are scheduled on an individual basis depending on interests and skills. Review the open positions.
School Service & Court Ordered
Sign up for any designated project. Please email the Volunteer Department at least three days in advance of your shift if documentation of your hours will be required.
We provide a volunteer service hours log which can be used as verification of service hours for schools, clubs or churches.
All court-ordered volunteers must be cleared in advance by the Volunteer Department. Misdemeanor offenses are permitted only—no violent, sexual, or theft related crimes. Verification requirements must be turned in on your first visit.
To request approval, submit a completed court-ordered volunteer agreement, the original ticket or court paperwork showing the reason for the court ordered hours as well as the total number of hours required, and a completed volunteer waiver to firstname.lastname@example.org.[/fusion_text]
