Why Choose Feeding San Diego?

Food insecurity is scary. Not having enough food can be the difference between life and death. The frustrating thing is that there IS enough food in the United States to go around. The question is–how do we get it to the people who need it?

I am forever grateful to my father, Joe O’Connor, for setting the example for me. He started rescuing food over 20 years ago from his local grocery store. He went every Tuesday and Saturday morning at 6:30 AM to load up an old borrowed van with leftover food so that it wouldn’t get thrown away. He was adamant about not making any other plans on those mornings because he knew that if he didn’t show up to get the food, it would be tossed and people would go hungry. He drove the van to Catholic Charities in downtown San Diego, and volunteers helped him unload it (thankfully, because he had trouble walking from a knee injury), to be given out to people in need. Next stop was to buy a coffee–black, no sugar–and head home to read the newspaper. He did this until the day before he died at 81 years old, often bringing a grandchild or two along to help.

I feel incredibly fortunate that I am continuing his legacy on a larger scale in my role at Feeding San Diego. I lead a team that helps rescue over one million pounds of food every month from over 300 local grocery stores, including the very same one my father frequented all those years ago. I am grateful to be part of an organization that is literally Feeding San Diego.

Paulette headshot“One of the strongest values that my family showed me was that food is something that everyone deserves without shame. My mom was laid off once, and I saw my uncle show up to my house with groceries, that’s just something we do, and I still remember that feeling of love and kindness. Now, in Feeding San Diego, I get to do that for hundreds of families every day. When we send boxes of food that say ‘With Love, from Feeding San Diego,’ it has a deeper meaning for me, and I enjoy doing that every day.”
